Summary:

A Luxembourg-based SME has developed and manufactured a device that can control solar modules. These controls can be done on-site, as the equipment is highly transportable, and are useful for quality certification (during installation) or during maintenance of the solar panels. The technology can also be used to produce evidence of damage caused to the panels. Commercial agreement with technical assistance is sought.

Details:

Solar panels are often moved over long distances using different means of transport before arriving at their final destination and being installed. The Final Quality Control at the manufacturer is therefore not sufficient to ensure that no mechanical damage is caused to the PV modules by improper handling or by improper packaging during the long transport.

These pre-damages however have a huge impact on the long-term performance of the new solar system. In addition more new solar module manufacturers are coming at aggressive prices on the market, whose quality standards are unknown.

The Luxembourg SME has therefore developed a mobile testing device (see attached picture), to perform locally on site an objective performance analysis of the PV modules. This examination enables to ensure that only good modules are installed in the solar plant. In addition the mobile PV test laboratory allows sorting PV modules according to their measured peak power performance data in order to optimize the plant performance.

A novel Flasher based on an innovative LED high power radiation light source is integrated with a peak performance and I-V-characteristic curve measurement instrument in the mobile test laboratory. This makes it possible to perform flexible performance measurements according to the standard test conditions (STC) on the solar modules. High-resolution electroluminescence imaging allows detecting mechanical damage or inactive surfaces, which may affect the performance as well as the long term stability of the solar module (see attached picture).

The operation of the measuring system is run by user-friendly software. By starting the test, the modules are automatically analyzed and flashed. The measurement protocol of the respective solar module is saved with the scanned barcode number and stored in the database.

The testing device allows analyzing both monocrystalline and polycrystalline modules as well as thin-film modules. It also allows to identify underperformance in installed modules and to verify the inverters of the PV plant on their proper functioning.
