Summary:
A Dutch R&D organisation has developed a Superheated steam (SHS) technology to convert 2nd generation lignocellulosic biomass into various valuable components, like sugars. The Dutch R&D organisation is looking for companies in the value chain of lingo-cellulosic biomass for technical cooperation or license agreement. The requested companies can either be biomass suppliers, or end-users who are searching for feedstock flexibility.
Details:
Superheated steam (SHS) has long been used to dry food products and even to roast products such as peanuts, prawn crackers and potato chips. For some time now, this technology is used to convert 2nd generation lignocellulosic biomass – grass, straw, cane, bagasse, plant stems, wood and manure fibre – into various valuable components, like sugars. These sugars can be used as a raw material for cardboard, as animal feed, as sugars for the green chemical industry and in biogas production.
While SHS is not the only method for processing lignocellulosic biomass, in many other applications, like biogas, there is a considerable amount of residues. This is not the case for SHS in which all the biomass is used. The semi-finished products of SHS are, moreover, easy to transport since most of the air and water is removed from the biomass.
Lignocellulose can be degraded using enzymes. The use of SHS, however, does enable those enzymes to convert the hemicellulose and cellulose into sugars. This frees the lignin separately which can be used as alternative feedstock for various applications.
