Summary:
A German SME has developed a wireless and maintenance free sensor system for monitoring single photovoltaic modules. The system monitors each solar panel, optimizes performance and in case of problems (e.g. fire) it can switch modules off. So far the system can be applied for roof-mounted panels and the SME looks for a partner specialised in facades who is interested in development, adaption, integration and commercialization of the system for facade-integrated modules or in a license agreement.

Today the maintenance of photovoltaic plants comprising a large number of modules is not very efficient and rather cost-intensive as a lot of manpower is necessary to detect problems with individual modules.
A German SME that is active in the development of technologies for the monitoring and fire protection of photovoltaic plants has therefore developed a sensor technology which allows the wireless and lossless query of the condition of hundreds of thousands single solar panels. The system is easy to integrate and retrofit but up to now it can only be used for roof-mounted panels. Therefore, the SME would like to adapt the system so that it can also be used for facade-integrated modules. In this connection the SME is looking for a partner specialised in facades who can test and integrate the new system into his facades. The partner could then also commercialize or license the system.
The system consists of four main components.
1. Module sensor: the sensor continuously monitors the condition of each module. It can switch modules on and off and it can detect arcs. The module sensor is available both as an add-on solution to retrofit existing systems and as an integrated solution for new systems. The integrated module sensor is built into modules by the manufacturer in place of a junction box.
2. Sensor master: the master is the central communication interface. It collects data from the entire system and sends them online to the monitoring portal. The master is needed only in the case of monitoring. If you need fire protection or you want that the system only maximizes the energy output through the switch off of weak modules no master is necessary.
3. Monitoring portal: the monitoring portal is a web-based monitoring application that provides an unprecedented monitoring capability for total system transparency. The condition of each and every module can be queried. Any fault is remotely detected straight away and can quickly be localised and fixed.
4. Irradiation Sensor (prototype): wireless and maintenance free. The sensor measures the irradiation of the sun.
