A research unit of a university of Luxembourg has developed a method suitable to detect the grid impedance at the point of connection of an electrical inverter. This invention permits to adapt inverter operations, e.g. power injection, frequency and voltage control, to be adapted to the local grid angle in ohmic low voltage grids.

The present invention relates to a method suitable to detect the grid impedance angle at the point of connection of an electrical inverter. This invention permits to adapt inverter operations, e.g. power injection, frequency and voltage control, to be adapted to the local grid angle in ohmic low voltage grids. More specifically, by applying a momentary jitter signal to the nominal frequency controlling the output of an electrical inverter, a fluctuation in the inverter output signal can be detected as long as the power angles between the inverter and the grid are mismatched. The inverter power angle can then be adapted and matching of the power angle is achieved when the fluctuations subside.
This invention can be applied in:
- decentralised electric power generation;
- inverter coupling to main grids;
- renewable energy systems: voltage and frequency control can be exerted independently despite a physical coupling between active and reactive power in ohmic and ohminc-inductive power grids.
